THE LITTLE MAGAZINE THAT COULD

Michael Itkoff and Taj Forer were students at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York, in the fall of 2003 when, while watching a Red Sox-yankee playoff game on television, they came up with the name "Daylight" for the new photojournalism magazine they planned to start together. Initially they conceived of Daylight as an outlet for their own work, but very quickly the magazine took on a life of its own, creating an innovative niche for itself as a forum that combines the work of emerging and citizen photographers with that of established photojournalists.

TRANSCRIPT OF CNN'S SEGMENT ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS BY IRAQI CIVILIANS, 2004

Exhibition that aired on NewsNight with Aaron Brown on September 22, 2004:

A NEW PHOTOGRAPHY MAGAZINE DOCUMENTS A WIDE RANGE OF ESTABLISHED AND EMERGING ARTISTRY AND ISSUES

picture2.jpg

It began with a basic concept: Provide an outlet for young artists, create a showcase for documentary photography and have fun while doing so. For Taj Forer and Michael Itkoff, co-editors of Daylight Magazine, an independent documentary photography magazine based in Chapel Hill, the solution was simple: start their own publication. "We were increasingly frustrated with how limited the number of outlets were for young artists and emerging artists," said Forer, a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College.
